Azrai has been documenting, consulting on and otherwise working live immersive experiences since they started for their local larping community in 2013. Theme parks, larp events, escape rooms, even themed bars all fall under the umbrella of themed design- their primary education. Since their YouTube channel began in 2016, they've covered immersive play events in many locations around the world. Here are some notable events that Azrai has worked and/or covered.

Please note that a majority of these were attended and documented before Azrai's transition. Azrai is transmasculine and now uses he/they pronouns.

Beginnings In Local Community (2013-2016)

Picture
A small collage of props and makeup that Azrai created for their local games or as tutorials.
Shortly after Azrai's first larp event (at WyrdCon 2013) they dove headfirst into their local Southern California larp community. They worked behind the scenes even in the year before making a campaign character themselves; playing NPCS, helping with scene design, props, costumes and makeup. Eventually they started creating informative videos and crafting tutorials on YouTube under the channel name: Larp House (now: Azrai).

They did this partly because health issues prevented them from continuing school or work at the time, but mostly because they are extremely passionate about the merging of immersive play and themed design. That YouTube channel quickly became well known in their niche, and served as a full time job.

San Diego Comic Con (2016)

In 2016 Azrai (still using their deadname at the time) was invited to speak alongside respected industry professionals at San Diego Comic Con, the largest pop culture convention in the world, about their work in immersive experiences. The panel was called "All About Live Action Role Playing," and they discussed innovation in the LARP world as well as the future of the industry.

Azrai highlighted the value of immersive play in a variety of applications including education, team building, community bonding and even therapy.

 College Of Wizardry (2016-2019)

Picture

Note: while the original company that ran College of Wizardry is no longer active or associated with Azrai, the game has been taken over by a company and team that Azrai firmly believes in.
In 2016 Azrai was invited to cover College of Wizardy, one of the most well known Live Action Role Play experiences in the world. A wizarding school game inspired by the Harry Potter universe, played in Czocha castle in Poland. Over the next few years they returned to cover multiple events, even being referred to as an "in-house YouTuber" along with colleagues such as MoMo O'Brien and Kaza Marie.
For these events Azrai; played professors and NPCs, organized lessons and encounters, created props and makeup on-site, and created/ brought props to facilitate gameplay for players- all while filming and documenting the events.

The documentation of these events was largely presented as a narrative video series called "The Jones Multiverse." Azrai created a reoccurring character that could visit any in-game world: a time-space traveling wizard called Wyllt Jones (Previously: Willow Jones.) Using this character they created a story that allowed them to showcase any game they visited as the character traveled different "worlds." The series can be found on YouTube and (and eventually TikTok under Wayfinders.) They eventually moved to Europe to facilitate this work, moving between Berlin (Germany), England, and Athy (Ireland) from 2017-2019

Skull And Crossbones (2017)

Picture
MoMo's role aboard their ship, The Relampago, was the shantywoman. She learned a full rotation of songs that she led and performed throughout the 4 day event. Azrai accompanied her on the tin whistle when possible, while filming with their hidden camera.
Picture
Azrai was invited to be assistant and cameraperson to MoMo O'Brien on Skull And Crossbones- a pirate larp run by Nautic Adventures on multiple ships as they sail the Baltic sea.

Azrai rigged hidden cameras and wore discreet sound equipment to capture as much of the event as possible without disturbing the experience of the players- in addition to whatever behind the scenes work was asked of them. by the company, including NPCing.

Azrai created their own trailer for the event (below), but MoMo created a full short film that she published to her YouTube channel which details the story and logistics of the experience- featuring incredible original covers of sea shanties, meticulous editing and... a paper puppet show!

Convention Of Thorns (2017)

Picture
Picture
Azrai's patrons sent them to Convention of Thorns (along with MoMo O'Brien)- an event based on the White Wolf "Vampire The Masquerade" universe. Vampire is possibly the largest "franchise larp" in the world and Azrai brought their perspective as an openly asexual player. The event was partly covered in a video about Vampire the Masquerade larp as as a whole, including events in Poland, Denmark and the states. The video is one of Azrai's most watched videos to date.

Avalon (2018)

Picture
Picture
Azrai's patrons and supporters allowed them to cover Avalon- the premiere event run by Avalon Larp Studios in the Polish countryside. Working with the studio, Azrai created a trailer (and with Michelle Fuzari, a cover of The Devil And The Huntsman) to help create a media legacy for the game. The event was a College Of Wizardry spin-off, set in a mysterious wizarding school called Avalon. A brutal "school" steeped in old magic and arthurian legend. Azrai later created a narrative vlog for the Jones Multiverse series using footage of the game.

To this day Azrai speaks highly of the studio and endorses their other projects.

Bothwell School Of Witchcraft (2018)

Azrai was brought on to be cameraperson and assistant to MoMo O'Brien again in 2018 at Bothwell School Of Witchcraft in England. Bothwell is The UK's Premiere Magic School Experience inspired by worlds like Harry Potter and The Magicians. Azrai played a mystery-obsessed, codebreaking daughter of an actual demon... and MoMo played a powerful witch with a demon possession problem. They were an inseparable team. Azrai used their character's obsessive truth-seeking personality as justification to document everything with their camera over the course of a long weekend full of spells, magical creatures and- of course- wizard battles.

MoMo created a feature length film about the event complete with special effects and soundtrack:

MARKED: A School For Heroes (2018)

Picture
event photography by Oliver Facey and Tom Garnett.

Azrai was invited to be a guest alongside MoMo O'Brien and Kaza Maries to document Marked: A School For Heroes. A weekend-long game at an estate in England. The game was based on stories like X-Men and the Umbrella Academy with heavy themes in civil rights activism. Azrai was cast as Xephyr Zian, an alien-human hybrid. For this role, they created a full body creature suit by hand over the course of about 6 months, their workshop being their various bedroom floors as they moved around Berlin. More about the suit can be found in the props/fabrication page.

Azrai's character was in an in-game band with MoMo and Kaza, called Starbright, and they gave two performances over the course of the event. Both Azrai and MoMo created original covers for the band.

Azrai created a short film about the event, explaining the themes and nature of the game. The film features special effects, both covers, and original scores all done by Azrai.

Empire Larp (2019)

Picture
Picture

Azrai's patrons sent them to Empire Larp in England, one of the largest "festival larps" in the world. Each event averages at about 1600 players and 300 crew members. Experiencing a variety of event styles is important to Azrai, so that they can note design choices, production differences and community management techniques. Empire Larp remains one of their favorite events they have ever attended.

To preserve player privacy and the immersive atmosphere, they do not allow filming, but Azrai has done a write-up of their experience here, in this patreon post.

Azrai's patrons sent them to a murder mystery event set on a real steam train in England. Creative Director Cameron Readman (of Rogue Events LTD, and Bothwell School of Witchcraft) ran a successful kickstarter that funded the 4 hour game. The players took a train ride across the English countryside as major story events played out both on the train and during their stops.

Azrai created multiple pieces of promotional material for the kickstarter, and plans on incorporating their footage into an upcoming video outlining their favorite immersive play events they've attended.

Twin Mask (2020)

Picture
Event videography by Landon Donoho, Phil Newman and The Scabby Rooster.
Azrai attended Twin Mask alongside notable industry figures like MoMo O'Brien, Kelly Eden, ScabbyRooster, and Xander Jeanneret.

Azrai played a magical sword brought to life, and worked with friend at LARP Empire to create the sword that would be gifted to one of the players as a weapon at the end of the event, that the player could then keep and use for their character. This was a meaningful game to them, located in Southern California and entrenched in the community there that awakened their love of immersive play seven years previously.

(Twin Mask is also the larp that Jeff Goldblum visited in an episode of The World According To Jeff Goldblum on Disney+)

Beinspora (2020)

Picture
Azrai has their students sit on blankets and pillows on the floor to view the ceiling projection, using light and projected imagery to give the students the feeling of looking into space.
Picture
Azrai wrote and put together a presentation on theoretical time-space magic, using lights, music and projections. The subject matter is based on real theoretical quantum physics, given a slight magical twist.
Azrai organized a workshop (referred to as a lesson in-game) for their students to grow their own "resonant crystals," a simple science project with a magical twist. "Resonant crystals" were said to be crystals that hold magical intent and energy- almost like batteries. Every player got to grow and take home a jar of their own crystals, and were given instructions for growing them further if they wished.
Picture
Azrai was invited and paid to work Beinspora, a magic school event in the USA, as a guest. They ran classroom workshops for the players alongside MoMo O'Brien, Kaza Marie, and their assistants. Ultimately the circumstances of the event resulted in guests and professors needing to take a larger role in storytelling for the other players. One such circumstance resulted in Azrai's classroom being relocated with none of the planned equipment or set dressings. So they created their classroom using nothing but their filming equipment: lights, projections, video effects and musical soundscapes.

Together with the other guests and professors, they created a storyline for players to follow and facilitated play to salvage an experience. While the game organizers themselves have stepped back from event running to reevaluate their strategies, Azrai remains proud of what the professors, special guests and players created together.
